What Does Seborrheic Keratosis Look Like?

Seborrheic keratosis also known as barnacle of old age are normally small lesions that appear on the skin of an infected person. They are usually painless and do not cause cancer or any skin infection. Seborrheic keratosis is derived from the word seborrhea which means the pour of oil. In the human skin there are two types of glands, there is the sweat glands and the oil glands. The oil glands secret oily substances which help to keep the skin moisturized while the sweat glands help to remove the excess water and toxins from the body. Seborrheic keratosis normally arises to individuals with dry skin.

So what does seborrheic keratosis look like?

The bumps or rough surfaces that appear on your skin or face may have very different defining characteristics which look almost similar. The appearance of seborrheic keratosis on an individual’s skin depends on the type of skin and the extent of infection. Some seborrheic keratosis on someone’s skin may make the skin have a rough surface. It will look like someone has planted some clay on your skin. The rough surface looks like skin outgrowths that are rather dead. At the edge of the outgrowths they are very thin as to give the impression that they can be removed picking with your fingernails.

There is seborrheic keratosis that is smooth with horn pearls.  The skin surface develops bumps that are very smooth and seed like. They are normally lighter or darker than the surrounding tissue depending on the individual’s skin. Sometimes these horn peals are not visible with a naked eye especially the light ones for light skinned individuals; you will need the help of a magnifying glass to see them. Other seborrheic keratosis form warty surfaces, they look almost similar to warts however they do not have infectious viruses which cause other skin infections. As they develop some of them may have rough surfaces while some may have smooth surfaces.

Seborrheic keratosis are never itchy at the mild stages of growth however as they develop they tend to be itchy especially for the older people. If an individual picks on a seborrheic keratosis then they might cause it to irritate since this infections don’t like disturbance. For cosmetic purposes it is always recommended that you get rid of the infection. There are many techniques of getting rid of seborrheic keratosis but first ensure that you have a dermatologist run test on your skin.
