Curettage & Cautery

Curettage & Cautery or Electrosurgery is a procedure to remove skin growths performed under local anaesthetic. You may feel a pushing sensation but no pain. The growth is cut away using a sharp spoon shaped instrument – a curette, and then the skin is cauterised to stop the bleeding with a hot wire beaded tip – electrosurgery. A dressing is then applied and you will be advised how to care for your wound to minimise scarring.

Hyperpigmentation is common following cautery.
